Black Mothers: Exemplars of Resilience

Middle and older adult Black women asserted that one pathway to resilience is engaging memories and remembering profiles of exemplars. Not surprisingly, mothers and maternal figures are one of the frequently identified exemplars of resilience. They represent sources of inspiration and models during difficulties.

They epitomize a portrait of resilience because they transcend hardships and challenges, embody spiritually-oriented principles, use resourceful thinking & creativity, engage in generosity, selflessness, and sacrifice.

Thus, when in the midst of adverse circumstances and adversity, middle and older adult Black women tell us to engage with these memories and be inspired to press on and move forward.
